The Fiction
The writer H. P. Lovecraft (1890 - 1937) is known as the father of modern American horror. He took horror away from the Christian centered dark fantasy of the 19th century (i.e. cross-fearing vampires, tormented ghostly souls) and replaced it with an uncaring universe of horrible monsters and terrible alien gods. Central to Lovecraft's universe were the Great Old Ones, immense beings, often of incredible intelligence, that rule time and space.
