The nights are drawing in and memories of summer heat are fading fast.
But as the sun rose over Tynemouth Pier in Tyne and Wear yesterday morning early risers could be forgiven for thinking the striking scenes might herald a beautiful Indian summer.
As the sun rose slowly and silently over the water it cast a golden autumnal glow over the landscape leaving just the silhouette of the lighthouse and the masts of a handful of sailing boats.

While millions of Britons slept the golden dawn was captured by a lone photographer who himself was watched by just a few circling seagulls.

But despite the picture giving every indication that the warm glow of autumn could be set to return, forecasters are less optimistic.

They have warned rain and gale force winds in some parts are just days away with even a few snow flurries expected over the Scottish mountains.

Autumn sees the start of the 'rutting' season where the stags and bucks bellow in an attempt to attract the female does and hinds.
